Bijilo Forest Park is an absolute highlight of any visit to the Gambia and one of the most accessible wildlife experiences in West Africa. This small but beautifully preserved area of coastal woodland is home to tamed green vervet monkeys and red colobus monkeys that have been habituated to human presence over many years.
Walking through Bijilo you will encounter these extraordinary animals at remarkably close range. They move through the trees above you, sit along the pathways, and go about their daily lives in the forest with complete ease and confidence. It is a genuinely magical experience, particularly for children, and completely unlike anything you will find at a zoo or safari park.
The forest is also outstanding for birdwatching, with over 100 species recorded within the park. The dense canopy and varied vegetation provide habitat for everything from sunbirds and weavers to raptors and hornbills, and the compact nature of the park means serious sightings are possible even on a short visit.
Well maintained walking trails wind through the forest, and the whole experience is calm, shaded, and completely peaceful. Entry fees are modest and the park is well managed and genuinely worth multiple visits.
